Long-Time Resident With Strong Ties to the Community

Gary was born in Toledo, Washington and has lived in the St. Croix Valley area since he was a boy. The youngest of three brothers, Gary has fond memories of growing up in Stillwater where he met his wife, Ann. The couple have been married for 52 years. They have three daughters and seven grandchildren who all attended Stillwater Area Public Schools. Gary enjoys fishing and is a big supporter of Pony athletics.

Commissioner Kriesel represents the citizens of District 3, which includes the communities of Afton, Bayport, Baytown Township, Lake Elmo, Lake St. Croix Beach, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Oak Park Heights, St. Mary's Point, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, and West Lakeland Township.

He retired from Northern States Power (Xcel Energy) after 33 years where he worked as a senior area specialist in the gas division. After retiring, he served two years on the Stillwater City Council. He is a U.S. Navy veteran and serves on many advisory boards for Washington County.

Commissioner Kriesel is an advocate for allowing counties to set their own tax levies and to manage issues related to a rapidly growing population. He has established himself as a strong and creative voice for fiscal responsibility, sound investments, and leadership. Washington County has the 2nd lowest tax rate in the metro and AAA bond ratings by both Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s.

During his time in office, Kriesel has forged positive relationships with local, state and federal leaders, building consensus and gaining support for key projects, including the proposed Highway 36/Manning interchange, St. Croix River Crossing, Brown’s Creek Trail, and the purchase of the 15-acre Aiple Property for a new shoreline park on the St. Croix.
